George Williams was born and lived in DuBois where he devoted his entire professional career (46 years) to local radio stations, sports broadcasting, and the broadcasting industry. He was a director, vice-president, and general manager of Tri County Broadcasting (WCED-AM and WOWQ-FM). He was well known for his exceptional talent as a sports broadcaster.
Williams was the play-by-play broadcaster for WCED for more than four decades, describing high school and college football and wrestling matches as well as scholastic and sandlot games, including little league baseball. He covered Clarion University wrestling from the early 1970s through 1988, earning a reputation as the Voice of the Clarion Golden Eagles because of his incisive coverage of the sport. Williams also broadcast college football, including Clarion, Penn State, Pitt, and Maryland games. He freelanced for the Tobacco Network, Steeler Network, and the CBS Radio Network. He traveled to Florida yearly to broadcast interviews from the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training camp. No event was too small or too big for William's coverage.
For his contributions to sports broadcasting, Williams was inducted into the Eastern Wrestling League Sports Hall of Fame, the Clearfield County Region Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, and the Clarion University Sports Hall of Fame. He was honored by the DuBois Booster Club for his coverage of high school sports, by the DuBois Little League Association for his many years of All-Star game coverage, and by the Clarion University Wrestling Club for his dedication to Clarion wrestling.
Williams served the broadcasting industry by organizing and heading liaison committees with school officials to negotiate rights fees for local coverage and with telephone industry officials to negotiate telephone tariffs. He conceived the idea of telephone line sharing among radio stations broadcasting sports events, saving thousands of dollars for broadcasters. In 1984 he served on the National Association of Broadcasters Program Transmission Charges and Services Task Force.
Williams was active in the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, serving as director, secretary, and vice president before becoming joint board chairman in 1971. He served as general chairman for three PAB Gold Medal Awards Banquets. In 1972 he has honored by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters and Telecasters with the Distinguished Service Award. The House of Representatives of Pennsylvania recognized Williams with a Resolution for his contributions to broadcasting. |
