LeRoy Schneck has served the community of Warren, Pa., as a radio broadcaster for more than fifty years. In 1946, after World War II, Schneck and three other veterans built WNAE, a 1000-watt daytimer in Warren. Two years later, they added an FM station (later WRRN), when FM was in its infancy and few listeners had FM receivers. Schneck bought the stations in 1974, formed a new company (Kinzua Broadcasting), and in 1995 built a third station (KNNB). He is the owner and manager of all three stations.
In addition to his managerial duties, Schneck has been an on-air personality for more than fifty years. Always a newsman (he was working at WCED in DuBois in 1941 and read the news announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor), Schneck has broadcast the fifteen-minute 8 a.m. news segment since WNAE went on the air. Since 1947, he has broadcast his daily commentary on life, Just Stuff, from the station six days a week.
Schneck has been active in industry affairs throughout his career. He was one of the early members of the National Association of FM Broadcasters, an organization founded in the '60s which later became the National Radio Broadcasters Association. In 1984, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Radio Broadcasters Association.
Schneck was also active in the Daytime Broadcasters Association and the National Association of Broadcasters. He served two terms (1989-1993) on the Radio Board of the National Association of Broadcasters. Schneck helped found, and later served as president, of the Pennsylvania News Broadcasters Association, which had as its purpose to improve broadcast news.
Schneck has been an active member of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters for many years. He has served several terms on the Board of Directors and was chosen as PAB Broadcaster of the Year in 1992. He has been PAB's official photographer for many years and has documented many PAB events with his photographs. Schneck is the recipient of the Allegheny College Gold Citation for Community Service, the Warren Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award, and the JC Community Service Award. He has served on the Board of Representatives for Penn State Stations WPSX/TV and WPSU/Radio for twenty years.
He has served Warren as United Fund chairman, director of the Chamber of Commerce, and president of the Travel Promotion Agency. He is a frequent emcee of barbershop competitions and concerts.
